Physical Changes

I've been learning about physical changes in Science.  Knowing about this topic helps me know if I caused a physical change or not.  The part I know the most about is that when you cause a physical change what you changed is still the same kind of matter.  The part that is the most confusing is why it is called a physical change.  I'd like to know more about how to change the state of some things.

Larissa, what is a physical change? How can you cause physical change? I have never really studied that. If I did, then I don't remember. Can you give me an example of physical change?

  2. The first sign of a good scientist is asking questions. You must be a very good scientist!

Many of the students in the labs that I teach at the academy did a lab last semester about physical and chemical changes; they got confused, too. But it was less confusing when we observed different kinds of changes and discussed whether they were physical or chemical. Maybe you can get a team of scientists together to find changes to investigate?

    Good luck!

  3. Physical Change sounds sooo BIG. Maybe because it is BIG. Do you have a pencil, Larissa? Sometimes it gets blunt, so you need to sharpen it. That's a physical change, from blunt to sharp. How do you do it? You grab the electric pencil sharpener and in three seconds your pencil has a nice sharp point. The shapener makes a lot of noise; that's a physical change too, form quiet to noisy. If you run the sharpener too much, lets say 5 minutes, it may burn up causing smoke and sparks, and that's a physical change too. Except that if that happened, your daddy would be very cross and he might ask you to go to your room on time-out, which is a physical change again, from being active to spending quiet time by yourself.
    I love you, Kiddo.
Keep learning and you'll see many physical changes going on arround.

  4. Physical changes are such an interesting thing to learn about because we can see all sorts of physical changes everyday. When your butter melts on your toast in the morning or you make different shapes with clay, those are physical changes! Cool, huh? I love hearing about what you are learning.

I'm proud of you. Miss you lots!

  5. There is lots of big info in here, and it is called physical change because it means a change in the body or a change done by the body or hands.
